Aldi Trip

Aldi lured me in with cheap eggs -- .49 a dozen. And I couldn't help but buy a few more items. My closest Aldi is about 20 to 25 minutes away, or I would go more often. They have great prices on most of the basics -- eggs, milk, bread, oatmeal and usually produce. I even recommend their Mama Cozzi pizzas. Just $2.29 for a great cheese pizza.

However, I went into sticker shock when I saw the price of a can of peas .69. You can get tasty frozen vegetable on sale with coupons for free-.5o. Peaches were $1.49 a can! Like many stores their prices have increased over the last few years. I find their prices a little cheaper than Kroger. Another bonus is to get in and out of the store quickly!

Spent $46.46 (Including about $16 in produce. Fresh produce is one of the challenges to our budget.)

Here are a few prices from the Franklin store. Prices vary.
Saltines .89 (.88 at Kroger for their value crackers)
Granola $1.69 (hubs likes this brand best, with sale and coupon is usually under $1 at Publix)
Frozen OJ .99 (same as Kroger)
Wheat Bread $1.19
Red Seedless grapes $2.99 for 2 lbs
Gold Potatoes $2.99 for 5 lbs
Red Onions $1.49
Peaches .39 each
Fresh Garlic .89
Canned Salmon $1.99 (same as Kroger)
Pecans $2.49 (splurge for me)
Bouillon Cubes $1.29
Oatmeal $1.79

Not pictured one watermelon, which rolled down the driveway. LOL!

How Menu Monday Really Works

When I started menu planning several weeks ago, I was skeptical. I had a full refrigerator and pantry, and I was pretty good about throwing meals together at the last minute. Would meal planning be needless organization and add extra work to my week?

The answer is no. I've actually found it helpful.
It has helped me use ingredients on hand with little going to waste.
It is much easier to switch gears and switch menus when something comes up.
It is easier to have a plan when when a busy day occurs.
It has also expanded our menu. It has pushed me to look for new recipes including those shared by other menu planners.

All that being said...I'm going to show you how our menu actual works. You can see how my plan changed as the week progressed. So if you decide to try it, don't feel like you have to always stick to the plan. This is to make your week easier not harder. I look at the plan as more of a guideline not a rule.

Monday: 6 Can Chicken Soup fruit, tortilla chips.
This tasted surprisingly good. I threw it together in the slow cooker in the afternoon, so it was ready when we were after soccer practice There's no reason this wouldn't be as tasty cooked quickly on the stove.

Tuesday: Slow Cooker Sausage Ratatouille. I'll use this recipe as a starting point. As planned. I used squash, eggplant, one potato, one can of tomatoes and some garlic and onion powder. We all liked it.

Wednesday: Butternut squash ravioli. Green salad. This never happened. We has so many leftovers that we decided to go with that. My five year old feel asleep in her chair as she was doing homework, so she had White Castle hamburgers about 8 PM.

Thursday: Stir fry pork with spaghetti squash I'll add some broccoli and sliced carrots to the recipe. My five year old was reluctant to eat it, but then actually liked it. I used a package of brown gravy as the sauce. That was key as my family does not like spicy food.

Friday: Leftovers. Forgot about school carnival. We ate there. Great, as we didn't have any leftovers.

Saturday: Grilled chicken and veggies. We'll see what's in our CSA. It rained, so I made slow cooker chopped steak with peppers, onions and mushroom. Also had mashed potatoes, corn, and veggies and dip.

Sunday: TBA. Church picnic. We had our main meal there. I leave Sunday open as we usually have leftovers, change in plans, or I'll cook something I didn't get to that week.

New or Transfer Prescription Gift Card Offer?

Many stores or pharmacies offer gift cards if you have a new or if you transfer a prescription. Seems like I see these all time except when I need one. Please leave a comment or send an email if you know where I can find one. Thanks!

Menu Monday

Monday: Deli Mediterranean Chicken, couscous, hummus, warm pita bread, green salad, veggies and dip. In the afternoon, I'll put the chicken in the slow cooker to warm, so it will be ready after my daughter's soccer practice.

Tuesday: Chicken casserole. I'll use the leftover chicken. Will serve with salad, veggies and dip.

Wednesday: Leftovers

Thursday: Fish and Ratatouille.

Friday: Bean and rice burritos. Salad. Fruit.

Saturday: Pizza! Eating out. Going to try a gift certificate I purchased on restaurant.com for 80% off.

Sunday: TBA

Little Debbie Coupon

Click on this link to get a .75 Little Debbie Coupon. They are reasonable any day, which is probably why I don't see coupons for them often. Some varieties are on sale at Kroger for $1 through today. Also, you may want to hold on to these for double or triples at your local store.

Kroger Savings and My Surprise

Saturday night we had returned from a week stay in Orlando and what turned out to be an endurance test at the Disney theme parks. We often spent 6 to 8 hours a day there with two toddlers and a heat index over 100. We had a great time! I'll write more on this later. Several days later we still haven't' recovered yet. Ever feel like that after a vacation?

I made it to Kroger on Sunday night armed with an envelope of coupons. I was only planning one trip for everything this week. They were not out of too many things on my list. Things were going fine at the check out, but then the cashier stopped processing my coupons. She looked at the receipt and then looked at my coupons. "Is there something wrong?" I asked. "There's a 20 coupon limit," she said. I was aware of this policy at Harris Teeter, but for some reason did not connect this to Kroger. Maybe it was the fatigue.

The cashier looked at my coupons again. I thought she was going to ask something. Then, God Bless, she figured out how to put the rest of the coupons through. Yippee!

Sorry no picture as I hadn't unpacked the camera yet. The best deals were free milk, hot pockets, Starkist tuna and toothpaste. Some other good deals were Welch's low sugar jelly, Peter Pan peanut butter, Sun Maid raisins and pop tarts. The worst deal was probably White Castle frozen hamburgers, but these are a favorite for my mother in law and daughter.

I spent $57.05, including about $10 in fresh produce and diapers. Saved $80.31!

Menu Monday

Menu Monday returns! After a trip to Disney World last week, we are ready for some home cooked meals. To save money we rarely ate out, so we are ready for some hot, yummy meals.

Monday: 6 Can Chicken Soup fruit, tortilla chips.
I've seen this recipe a few places and wanted to try it. I'll add a little yellow food coloring and will decease the spicy tomatoes in half so the kids can eat it. I may also try it in the slow cooker for a few hours. We'll see how it works out.

Tuesday: Slow Cooker Sausage Ratatouille. I'll use this recipe as a starting point. I'll add eggplant, squash, tomatoes, and maybe potatoes or mushrooms. I'll use just regular pork sausage as that is what I have on hand.

Wednesday: Butternut squash ravioli. Green salad. For the topping, I'll use some toasted slivered almonds with butter or chopped tomatoes, parsley, cheese. For variety, I may try some sausage ravioli.

Thursday: Stir fry pork with spaghetti squash I'll add some broccoli and sliced carrots to the recipe.

Friday: Leftovers.

Saturday: Grilled chicken and veggies. We'll see what's in our CSA.

Sunday: TBA

Menu Monday

We have a busy week, so I will not be cooking much.

Monday: Grilled Pork Chops, corn on the cob, salad. We will have a late lunch instead of dinner as we have soccer practice at 5 PM.

Tuesday: Leftovers.

Wednesday: Fish tacos, chips and fruit.

Thursday: Veggie and cheese omelets, cheese biscuits, fruit.

Friday: Hobo Cheeseburgers, veggies and dip, fruit.
There are numerous recipes out there. Great for camping! For this version, I'll use Morningstar Farm burgers. Spray tin foil with Pam and sandwich the "burgers" between sliced potatoes and cheese. Bake at 350 for about 45 minutes.

Saturday: Slow cooker chicken and dumplings. Veggies. We'll see what's in our CSA basket.

Sunday: TBA

Publix and Walgreens Savings!

This was my shop from Monday. I stopped at Walgreens and picked up several items that were almost free with Register Rewards. Bought four items and received $14 worth of RR's. If you can roll these into other deals that's great. I had my two-year-old with me, so I purchased everything at once and used the RR's at Publix. Most stores will allow you to do this since they are general coupons. I've even heard some Kroger stores will take these. This is a really good week at Walgreens with several items free. Sales ends Saturday. OOP $2.24 (including subtracting the RR's). Savings around $17.

Good shop at Publix this week. Purchased several items for the stockpile. And once again my freezer is stuffed with pancakes. No big surprises. They had a couple unadvertised specials -- Dole pineapple juice and Hormel canned chicken. Also combined FLIPs with MF coupons for three small Digiorno pizzas at .50 each. Spent $35.29 and saved 82.22!

Kroger Super Doubles!

If you are in the Middle Tennessee area, this is the last day for super doubles at Kroger and Harris Teeter. I haven't had great luck at HT, so I'm always happy that some Kroger stores also participate int this great sale.

I made a quick run.

6 Danimals Smoothies, Free, plus tax (6 coupons from the Publix Summertime Savings Booklet)
5 Breyers Ice Cream, .27 each (5 coupons from the Raise Your Hand For Savings Booklet)

I have misplaced the receipt, but the total was around $2.

Note: the coupon bar codes from the Raise Your Hand For Savings Booklet start with a 9, meaning they may not double. It is up to each store to double or not. The HT in Brentwood will not double a couple code with a 9 or a couple that says do not double. However, KROGER WILL DOUBLE THESE!

Publix Sneak Peek

Check out I Heart Publix for a sneak peek at this Wednesday's new sale ad. She even has coupon match ups!
